Welcome to St Helens

The Metropolitan Borough of St Helens consisted, according to the 11th Century Domesday book as four townships namely Sutton, Parr, Windle and Eccleston. The name St Helens reportedly derives from a Chapel that once stood around the Church St area of the town centre that was named "St Elyns". In 1974 St Helens town became part of the borough of Merseyside.

St Helens has seen its share of industry over the years, from sail making, coal mining, glass production, smelting, watch- making and more. Its strategic position close to sand, the port of Liverpool and most importantly being sat right on top of the Lancashire coal fields made St Helens an ideal place to set up a business. Today, most of the industry that made St Helens a major town has either become outdated, or has moved to other locations across the globe.

This website has been designed to give an insight into the post industrial town, what businesses are in St Helens today, and how the once great industrial town is changing.
